Mark Morcombe
Chair of the UK Committee
Mark Morcombe joined Endeavour in May 2019 as Chief Operating Officer. He has more than 30 years of experience in the mining industry, with extensive expertise in leading safety, environment, mine planning, cost and productivity initiatives in underground and open pit mines in Africa and Australia. Prior to joining Endeavour, Mark was Chief Operating Officer of Centamin Plc, operator of the Sukari Mine in Egypt, and before this, he held the same role at Acacia Mining with three operating mines in Tanzania. Between late 2010 and April 2016, he held several senior roles at AngloGold Ashanti, including Senior Vice President, Planning and Business Development for the Continental Africa Region and Senior Vice President Ghana, during which he led the Obuasi gold mine turnaround project. Prior to this he worked for Gold Fields for nine years, including time as Vice President and Head of Operations of the South Deep Gold Mine in South Africa and General Manager of the Agnew Gold Mine in Western Australia. Mark has a B.Eng (Mining) from the Western Australian School of Mines.
Galen White
UK Committee member
Galen is a geologist with more than 27 years’ continuous experience in the mining industry. He spent ten years working in Australia, involved in exploration, resource development and production geology operational roles, before moving back to the UK. Galen joined CSA Global in 2008 where he held the position of Principal Resource Geologist before becoming a Senior Manager and a Board Member prior to the acquisition of CSA Global by ERM in 2019 after which he held a Partner at ERM role. In 2023 Galen became an independent consultant providing advisory services to clients and in September 2023 joined Bara Consulting as a Director of their UK business. Galen’s consulting activity includes project evaluation, Mineral Resource evaluation & auditing, due diligence appraisal, technical study management, operational improvement studies and, corporate advisory and public reporting. Galen is a Fellow of the AusIMM.
Brett Grist
Vice-Chair of the UK committee
Brett is a geologist with over 24 years’ experience gained in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia. Brett has led exploration, feasibility, and development of base metal and gold projects internationally, including in his present role as COO of London-listed Kavango Resources plc, which is exploring in Botswana. In previous roles, Brett successfully carried out significant mineral exploration in the UK, during which he also co-chaired the UK mining working group of the Critical Minerals Association from 2020 to 2021. Brett is particularly keen to help the AusIMM in advancing its international reach, and to see young people encouraged to enter the industry. Brett is a Chartered Professional Fellow of the AusIMM with CP status.
Jane Coll
UK committee member
Jane is a Senior Geologist currently working in the Resources and Mining team for CSA Global UK. She has over 18 years’ experience in a broad range of minerals sector activities including grade control, resource modelling, greenfields and brownfields exploration through to feasibility study. Jane studied geology at University College Dublin, after gaining her degree she worked in Western Australia for 14 years during which she completed a Graduate Certificate in Geostatistical Methods at Edith Cowan University (Western Australia). She returned to the UK in 2019 and is now living in Cornwall and enjoying learning about the local mining industry.
Grace Howe
UK Committee Member
Grace is an Exploration Geologist with over 6 years' experience across a variety of commodities and deposit styles. Grace is currently at Endeavour Mining, working on greenfields gold exploration projects in Cote D'Ivoire. Prior to this, Grace was at SRK Exploration Services, an exploration consultancy and geological field service provider, where she has worked on a variety of commodities and projects around the world. Grace began her career working for Consolidated Nickel Mines on an exploration programme in Zambia and holds a Master’s in Geology specialising in nickel-copper-PGE deposits, from the University of Leicester. Grace is also an Executive Committee member for Women in Mining UK and is the active Head of Membership and Education Outreach.
Rob Thomas
UK committee member
Rob runs a geotechnical consultancy that provides geotechnical input to mining projects worldwide. Rob has over 17 years of experience across various commodities, completing studies, supporting operations and undertaking technical reviews. Rob returned to the UK in 2022, having lived in WA since 2008. As a former chairperson of the West Australian Ground Control Group, Rob strongly advocates forums that promote knowledge sharing in formal and informal settings. Rob is a Chartered Professional Fellow of the AusIMM and CEng/CSci/REnvP with the IMMM.
Philipa Varris
UK committee member
Philipa has held leadership positions in environment, health, safety and community management in the mining sector for over 25 years, in Africa, Australasia and Latin America, across a number of mineral commodities. Recognised in 2020 as one of the 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining and awarded the Australian Centenary Medal, Philipa is driven by her mission to demonstrate that the mining industry can be truly sustainable. She holds an MSc in Natural Resources from Curtin University of Technology, is a Chartered Environmental Professional member with the AusIMM and is qualified by Corporate Directors International. Philipa is Head of Sustainability for Horizonte Minerals, and is a non-executive director of EnviroGold Global.
Dominic Claridge FAusIMM
UK committee member
Dominic has more than 30 years of experience in operations, project management, and consulting in precious and base-metal mining across Australia, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Dominic has considerable experience in underground and open-pit mining operations, having worked for many years on mine sites and then progressing to project management and C-suite executive. His experience working with a mix of junior and mid-tier mining companies has provided him with a multitude of skills in relation to all aspects of mining across a broad range of commodities.
Matt Mullins
UK committee member
Matt is London-based mining industry professional with a geological and mine planning background and +42 years’ experience in resource optimization and governance, in project development, and in business improvement processes. Matt has held senior positions in the mining industry including: SnowdenOptiro: Head of Advisory for the EMEAA region; ArcelorMittal – Head of Capital Allocation and Business Improvement; BHP Billiton – Head of Global Productivity; Vice President for Mineral Resource Development (global); and Member of the Chief Operating Officers Council, Southern Africa. Previously he was a mine geologist, a rock engineering researcher, a mining analyst and a consultant running his own company (twice). Matt is a Competent Person/Valuator in most major commodities with experience in most mining jurisdictions. He has been based in Johannesburg, Mali, Australia, and in London for the past 6 years, where he currently works as a mining consultant. Matt has been President of the Geological Society of South Africa and has chaired the SAMREC, SAMVAL and SAMCODES Committees. He is currently a member of the AusIMM Ethics Committee. Matt is a Fellow of the AusIMM, of the SAIMM, of the GSSA, and of the GSL, and is a Registered Natural Scientist.
Wilma Parsons
UK committee member
Wilma is a geologist with over 14 years’ experience in the mining industry. She spent 13 years working in North America, across exploration, production geology, and resource geology. Wilma studied geology at Queen’s University in Canada, and began her career as an exploration geologist in Northern Ontario Canada. During her career she has worked in a range of commodities, leading teams, and chaired the Exploration and Resource Functional committee from 2021- 2023 within the Trafigura mining group. Wilma moved to the UK in 2023 and joined Rio Tinto as a Senior Specialist Geologist working on the Simandou Iron Ore project in Guinea, but based in London.
