About this event
Geosciences is becoming increasingly unfashionable in society and the COVID19 pandemic has shone a lens on the vulnerability of the discipline, which will have flow on effects to the resources industry.
There is a desperate need to readdress the way in which we all talk about Geosciences and to change our narratives to create positive perceptions and become more relevant to society.
This presentation looks at ways we can change our narrative as individuals and as a community.

Dr Peter Betts
Professor in the School of Earth Atmosphere and Environment at Monash University
Professor Pete Betts is an academic in the School of Earth Atmosphere and Environment at Monash University. He has over 25 years of research and teaching experience and has a diverse research portfolio that includes the Evolution of the Australian plate, Precambrian tectonic reconstructions and orogenic processes, Red Sea tectonics and subduction dynamics. Pete is also the Associate Dean of Graduate Research in the Faculty of Science, where he provides leadership and strategic direction of the PhD program at faculty and university level. Pete is the new Geological Society of Australia President and recently was awarded the GSA’s WR Browne award for contributions to Geosciences of Australia. He is passionate about the long-term success of the Geosciences and has become increasingly engaged in understanding the perceptions of geosciences and the narrative that contributes towards this. He has been touring this presentation for the past 18 months as part of his GSA ambassador role.
