Join the New Zealand Branch for a tech talk - Gold Placers and Structural Complexity: Otago, New Zealand and Witwatersrand, South Africa.

About this event

The Witwatersrand is one of the most famous gold mining areas in the world, having produced more than 1,300Moz of gold from some of the deepest mines in the world. The gold in the Witwatersrand has been interpreted, for the last 100 years or more, as being deposited by fluvial process into the Witwatersrand Basin.

In this tech talk, Julian Vearncombe, retired Principal Consultant, and Dave Craw, Emeritus Professor, will summarise previous research on the Witwatersrand and outline an alternative gold mineralisation model. Exciting information for all the geologists out there!

Program
5:30PM - 6:00PM: Guest arrival and networking
6:00PM - 7:00PM: Speaker presentation and Q&A
7:00PM - 7:30PM: Networking

Speaker/s

Julian Vearncombe

Principal Consultant (Retired)
Julian was born in the town that leant its name to the New Zealand and South African religion. At school he captained the chess team and once played a tournament sat on the body of King Richard III. Julian has certificates from Leeds and a University that no longer exists (Prifysgol Cymru). For three days, upon the assassination of Anwar Sadat, he found himself stuck at Cairo airport with Joanna Lumley, but she had better connections at the Embassy! After successful brain surgery, he was an academic, a consultant and then he risked all on technology development. After that he risked everything left exploring for gold at Meekatharra, and subsequently base metals and tungsten. Today, Julian is busy being retired from responsibility.

Dave Craw

Emeritus Professor
Dave is an Emeritus Professor specialising in Geology, OU, with over 40 years’ experience with economic geology teaching and research, especially gold. Dave's recent hobby interest is placer gold.
