Waihi tech talk: From Dinky to Tier I: Exploring for blind epithermal vein systems in Nevada, USA
Join the New Zealand Branch for their Waihi tech talk: From Dinky to Tier I: Exploring for blind epithermal vein systems in Nevada, USA.
About this event
The state of Nevada is by a long way the USA’s most gold-rich state producing about 80% of the USA’s total Au. The state was founded in the 1860s on the discovery of the Comstock Lode, a similarly large volcanic-hosted epithermal system (>8Moz Au) and in the 1960’s recognition of the massive Carlin Trend (>200 Mozs Au produced) means Nevada is now ranked the fifth largest gold producing region in the world, only just behind countries, Canada and Russia.
Until recently the state had become regarded as a “brownfields jurisdiction” with the best ground locked up by major companies however, the discovery of the Silicon deposit in 2018, located in southern Nevada, one hour from Las Vegas and 400 km from the sediment-hosted gold deposits of the prolific Carlin Trend has led to a shift in exploration paradigms. The discovery was made by drilling under a thick, gold-barren silica-alunite cap. As of 2024 the Silicon and adjacent Merlin deposit comprise a volcanic-hosted epithermal system with a combined resource of >13Moz Au.
In this talk, Greg Dering, Vice-President of Headwater Gold, a Canadian-listed exploration company, will be discussing Nevada’s past and present, and the reappraisal of epithermal occurrences that is occurring throughout Nevada employing modern exploration models and insights gained from major epithermal and geothermal districts around the Pacific Rim, including the Hauraki goldfield and Taupo Volcanic Zone.
