It has been quite some time since our last HEDG gathering, so we are due for another meet-up at a historic pub in Hobart to discuss geoscience - or anything else that comes up. To make this event even more memorable, we’ve chosen the darkest and coldest part of the year to come together.

Mark your calendars for July 4th, 2024 - Independence Day in the United States. We’ll be meeting at The Winsto (officially known as The Eagle Hawk Inn), located at 381 Elizabeth St, North Hobart. This bar is renowned for its American-style food, making it a fitting choice for the occasion.

The bar is likely named after Sir Winston Churchill (to be confirmed), the wartime Prime Minister of the UK, whose mother was American. Join us to celebrate the US’s birthday and the fact that Canada was left to develop its own version of North America (we’ll skip over the War of 1812).

Please note that The Winston does not accept table bookings, so seating is first-come, first-served. I’ll arrive early to secure a table, but if we can’t find space for a large group, we’ll move 500 meters down the road to the Black Buffalo Hotel, or possibly the nearby Queens Head, which HEDG visited in 2023.

All AusIMM members, AIG members, and geoscientists and mineral industry professionals of any affiliation are invited, along with anyone else interested. These informal gatherings are a great opportunity to discuss geoscience, or anything else, over drinks and dinner.

Dr. Tony Webster, Geologist, Historian and classic pub enthusiast once again leads us on a culinary tour of iconic pubs complete with his usual insights on the role they played in the history and development of our capital city and gives us an chance to sample a few of the fine beverages they pruvey.
