Minerals capital projects: Drivers of excellence

Summary

The “Minerals capital projects: Drivers of excellence” course is designed to provide participants with Best Practices and learnings that have been shown to improve effectiveness for capital projects in the minerals industry. This program integrates findings from IPA’s extensive quantitative research that links project management practices to project outcomes. This training can be integrated with the company’s project management work process, allowing industry Best Practices to be incorporated into the project system. We will also provide on overview on the current state of capital projects including engineering and supply chain issues in the current project market.

The Project Management Best Practices course provides a forum to learn about the factors that lead to competitive and predictable project outcomes. The program is intended for existing project managers and other project professionals, as well as those who will take part as a team member on future projects including project sponsors and executive management. In this course, we present learnings derived from the analysis of thousands of actual projects.

As part of the course, IPA will share data from actual industry projects that show the positive effect that the practices have on project performance including faster execution duration, better construction safety results, and more predictable cost and schedule vs. the targets established in the early phases.

Course Program

The course will identify effective strategies for the following practices:

  • Aligning project objectives with business objectives
  • Building an effective team
  • Defining the project to best meet the business needs and project objectives
  • Strategies for managing the effect that permitting and shaping has on capital projects
  • Incorporating innovative technologies in capital projects
  • Managing the gates that serve as a key point of control for project definition
  • Understanding and managing risks
