Gamini Senanayake is currently an academic staff member engaged in teaching, research and higher degree research supervision related to Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at Murdoch University, Perth, Western Australia.
He won a Colombo Plan research scholarship from the Australian Federal Government to conduct higher degree research at Murdoch University. As an academic at Murdoch University, he has served in various administrative roles including the Academic Chair in Extractive Metallurgy, Postgraduate Research Director and the Head of Discipline of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering and Chemistry in the School of Engineering and Information Technology. Recently he served as the Head of Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry and Physics Discipline.
As an active member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) and a member of the Perth Branch Committee of AusIMM, he served as the co-chair and chair of the successful Lithium, Battery and Energy Metals Conference held in Perth, co-hosted by Murdoch University and AusIMM over five consecutive years (2018-2022).
As a researcher Gamini won the 2006 Extraction and Processing Science award from The Minerals, Metal and Materials Society (TMS).
He is also a professional member of TMS, SME and CIM. Gamini has published over 140 research articles in peer reviewed international journals and conference proceedings of AusIMM, SME and TMS.
