Tracy Hennig on Pioneering Change in Mining
The mining industry, historically recognised for its male-dominated landscape, is undergoing a transformative shift led by individuals like Tracy Hennig.
Recently appointed as Director of Compliance and Integration at Coronado Global Resources and building upon her previous role as Health, Safety, and Training Manager and Integration Manager, Tracy's journey from the Northern Territory to leadership underscores her resilience, dedication, and commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Tracy's career trajectory sheds light on her tenacity in overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities. "Starting in 1991 with ARCO Coal Pty Ltd in administration and quality assurance roles, my involvement in the mines rescue team paved the way for a move into an underground Occupational Health and Safety officer role," Tracy shares.
She emphasises her early exposure to diversity: "Growing up in a remote part of the Northern Territory shaped my perspective on diversity and inclusion, becoming a guiding principle throughout my career."
Tracy's leadership journey is marked by groundbreaking milestones reflecting her determination to challenge norms. "Being the first female in the Bowen Basin mines rescue in 1992 and later becoming the first female production manager at Gregory-Crinum Mine in 2014 and at Mt Arthur Coal in 2016 were significant moments," Tracy states. "It's about proving that gender should never be a barrier to leadership roles."
Tracy's commitment to inclusion and diversity extends beyond the workplace to the broader community. "As part of Coronado’s Australian leadership team, promoting women in the resources sector and mentoring initiatives, especially with young women transitioning into the workforce, are essential to me," Tracy notes.
She adds, "Contributing to the community through initiatives like the children’s Christmas toy drive at Mt Arthur Coal and supporting mental wellbeing align with my belief in enriching the lives of those around us."
As Tracy Hennig continues to make strides in the mining sector, her story serves as an inspiration for aspiring leaders and advocates for diversity. Tracy's journey is not just about personal success but a call to action for the industry to embrace inclusivity and recognise the valuable contributions of women.
In Tracy's concluding words, "Diversity and inclusion aren't checkboxes; they're the keys to innovation and progress. Let's work towards a mining industry where everyone, regardless of gender or background, has the opportunity to excel."
