Josephine Liantono AAusIMM

Senior Mining Engineer - Ventilation & Mine Services, BHP

Josephine’s interest in commodities was ignited by her grandfather, who owned various businesses, including a jewellery shop in Indonesia. He was deeply involved in the entire process of producing gold bullion and crafting jewellery designed by Josephine’s grandmother. During her early primary school years, Josephine’s grandfather entrusted her with the daily responsibility of reporting the US Dollar exchange rate, as well as oil and gold prices. He would challenge her to predict the price movements for the following day, sparking a lifelong passion for the sector.

As a Senior Mining Engineer at BHP, Josephine draws on an extensive academic foundation, holding a Master of Professional Engineering (Mining Engineering) and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Economics from the University of Western Australia. Her dedication has been acknowledged through numerous prestigious awards, including the 2020 AusIMM Epiroc Scholarship, the 2021 AusIMM EEF Premium Scholarship, and the distinguished 2021 AusIMM Sir Frank Espie/Rio Tinto Leadership Award.

Her career spans multiple facets of the mining industry in both operational and corporate roles, covering commodities such as iron ore, nickel, copper, bauxite, and uranium. She has also gained expertise in mining engineering, metallurgy, environmental approvals, external auditing, and consulting.

Josephine is a passionate advocate for inclusion and diversity in engineering and is committed to nurturing the future pipeline of engineers. She has held numerous leadership roles, including Founding President and Co-Founder of Women in Engineering and Mathematical Sciences UWA, Chairperson of UWA Young Engineers, and Undergraduate Representative on the UWA Faculty of Engineering & Mathematical Sciences Inclusion & Diversity Committee. Additionally, she served as Vice-President Careers of UEC, Treasurer of AusIMM UWA SC, and a WA Mining Club Young Professionals committee member.

Currently, Josephine contributes as an organising committee member for the 2021, 2022, and 2023 AusIMM New Leaders Conference, serves as the AusIMM New Professionals Network Ambassador for Western Australia, and holds a three-year term as a committee member of the AusIMM Mining Society.
