Darren Matthews

Biography
Darren currently manages a range of Rio Tinto’s scope 3 initiatives related to its iron ore sales. This includes partnerships with steelmakers, research providers and universities to find product and processing solutions that reduce carbon emission across the ore to steel value chain.
Darren joined Rio Tinto in 1996. Over a 27 year career, he has worked across a range of leadership and technical roles including research and development, technical marketing, industry analysis, commercial strategy and project engineering.
Steel decarbonisation is a fast-evolving sector and a fulfilling opportunity for Darren to leverage his significant experience in iron ore product application to reduce carbon emissions.
Darren has a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree.

Fundamental research and partnerships - Unlocking the use of Pilbara iron ore in low carbon ironmaking
This keynote will explore the opportunities and challenges of low carbon emissions ironmaking. Darren will discuss Rio Tinto’s steel decarbonisation program and key partnerships. The presentation will also focus on the need for fundamental research to best position Pilbara iron ore for use in emerging low carbon ironmaking technologies.
