Professor Deanna Kemp
Director, Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining
Professor Deanna Kemp is Director of the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM) at the University of Queensland’s (UQ) Sustainable Minerals Institute. She is one of a limited number of university-based social scientists who combine critical scholarship with close industry engagement.
At CSRM she leads an international program of work enabling an international team of 40 staff and students working across the social, political, and spatial sciences. In addition to her University work, Deanna Co-chairs the Board of Trustees for the Institute for Human Rights and Business and the Expert Independent Review Panel for the International Council on Mining and Metals’ new member process.
She was a member of the Expert Panel that drafted the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management and in 2020 published "Credibility Crisis: Brumadinho and the Politics of Industry Reform", with Emeritus Professor Andrew Hopkins. Prior to joining UQ in 2006, Deanna worked in the mining industry in both corporate and operational roles, including at BHP, and as an independent social assessor for a number of other global resources companies.
