Winner of Best Presentation Award, Damien Ryba, shares his top tips when submitting an abstract
We spoke with Damien Ryba, the 2021 winner of the Best Presentation Award, for his presentation "Mangoola open cut mine rehabilitation design - Getting the fundamentals right", at the Life of Mine Conference.
Damien Ryba, Principal Environmental Consultant – Ecological Restoration Specialist, Umwelt (Australia) shares his tips for those wanting to submit an abstract.
Where did you present your abstract?
AusIMM's Life of Mine Conference 2021.
Why did you decide to submit an abstract?
I thought I had an interesting story to share about successful rehabilitation methods being implemented on site at the Mangoola Coal Mine.
What did you enjoy most about the experience?
I really enjoyed presenting to an engaged and interested audience at the conference. What was your top reason for presenting?
I wanted to share a story of successful rehabilitation methods, with the aim of helping to inform and motivate others to improve rehabilitation quality and outcomes across the industry.
I think the message of focusing on getting the basics right from the start is an important one to communicate. Rehabilitation can often be an after-thought on many sites, but successful outcomes are only achieved with early planning and detailed execution.
Do you have any advice for those submitting an abstract?
The audience really seems to respond to practical presentations with information on learnings and setbacks, that can be applied in the field at their own operating sites.
