Site tour to Meandu Mine

AusIMM is pleased to offer Life of Mine delegates the opportunity to take part in an all inclusive site tour to Meandu Mine, in Queensland's South Burnett region.

Work first began on Meandu Mine in the South Burnett in 1978 after the Queensland Government made the decision to go ahead with the construction of the adjacent Tarong Power Station. The mine is 25 kilometres south-east of Kingaroy in the Queensland South Burnett region.

Meandu Mine currently has five working pits and is capable of supplying the adjacent Tarong Power Stations with up to seven million tonnes of coal a year.

Rehabilitation is an essential part of responsible mining – and when the last excavator leaves a section of Stanwell’s Meandu Mine, it’s just the beginning for that section of land’s future.

Stanwell has undertaken progressive rehabilitation of Meandu Mine ever since acquiring the site, minimising the active area of mining operations at any point in time to ensure that the land can be effectively returned to a sustainable post-mining use.

In fact, there are areas of rehabilitation at Meandu Mine dating as far back as 1989, preceding Stanwell’s ownership.

An impressive 660 hectares of land has been rehabilitated at Stanwell’s Meandu Mine, with a large percentage of the site being restored to native vegetation connecting the Yarraman State Forrest and Tarong National Park.

In 2021, 153 hectares of rehabilitated land was progressively certified by the Queensland Department of Environment and Science, meaning it has been assessed as achieving the key objectives of safe, stable, non-polluting, and sustainable. This represents one of the largest ever areas of Native Ecosystem rehabilitation to be certified in a single application in Queensland.

Stanwell and mine operator BUMA Australia work closely to plan, construct, and maintain rehabilitated areas to the standards that are achieved. This work hasn’t been undertaken in isolation; the team worked collaboratively in consultation with the community to identify other land use areas for the site.

This consultation has resulted in our post-mining land uses expanding to include cattle grazing and securing future water supply for the community in addition to the existing native ecosystem rehabilitation.

Meandu is owned by Stanwell Corporation Limited (Stanwell), a major provider of electricity to the people of Queensland, the National electricity Market and retail customers and operated by Buma Australia under strict safety and environmental conditions.
