Dr Ivor Roberts talks to AusIMM

Dr Ivor Roberts, Co-Chair of the International Mine Health and Safety Conference advisory committee and executive director at the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety has provided a preview of what he will discuss on the final day of the conference.

Presentation title:

Transforming Mine Safety and Health: The Journey of the MARS Program

Synopsis:

The mining industry is at a pivotal juncture in its approach to ensuring the safety, health, and well-being of its workforce. The Mental Awareness Respect and Safety (MARS) Program of the West Australian Government seeks to broaden traditional safety measures to include mental health awareness and the fostering of respectful workplace relationships, adopting a more comprehensive view of worker well-being. This effort towards systemic change involves research, training, and campaigns aimed at promoting a culture of inclusivity and well-being. The role of the MARS Program is instrumental in guiding the industry towards these goals, facilitating collaboration between government bodies, industry leaders, and workers to implement practices that address both the physical and psychological safety of mining personnel. This approach reflects a significant evolution in industry practices, emphasizing the importance of a supportive and safe working environment as fundamental to the sector's sustainability and efficiency.
