Brumadinho Community Representative

On January 25, 2019, the most appalling work crime in Brazil's history happened in Brumadinho, my hometown, when a Vale's mining waste dam burst. My sister was killed along with 271 others, and since I learned that this could have been prevented and that Vale knew it was going to burst, I'm no longer just an English teacher, I became a community representative and an advocate for justice and change in the mining sector. By raising awareness of what happened my goal is that all the necessary changes in the mining sector to avoid death and destruction are accomplished. Vale and Tuv Sud's(the certifier) failure in Brumadinho should have never happened and the consequences of their lack of responsibility and humanity never forgotten.

I was a key-note speaker at the UN-supported PRI in Person in 2019 and shortly after that I was in a European advocacy campaign where I met with several political representatives working on the issues of human rights and mining in particular, as well as with human rights defenders in Germany, Holland, Belgium. In London, I spoke at the Summit on Global Mining and Tailings Safety on the eve of the first anniversary of the tragedy. I was also a guest speaker at the Global Launch Event of the New Industry Standard on Tailings Management.

Since 2019 I have been an active member of Avabrum and have attended several events online and in person as a community representative, and in 2021 I was invited to join the UN Global Tailings Management Institute Advisory Panel for the formation and establishment of the Institute.
I am currently in Brisbane, Australia, where I've delivered several presentations on the social cost of tailings management.

I use this platform to regularly share updates and news regarding the situation of both Brumadinho and Mariana and to show the reality behind all the propaganda and misinformation spread by the criminal companies involved.
