Brett Garland

Brett joined the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) in January 2019 as Director, Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC).

MISHC is one of six centres within SMI. Its focus is on the delivery of research and post-graduate industry-based education to continually improve health and safety in the resource industry .

Brett is a mining engineer by profession with over 40 years experience in the Australian mining industry. He has held numerous management and executive management positions, including Managing Director of Caledon Coal and Chief Executive Officer of Baralaba Coal.

Between 2005 and 2015, Brett was a member of the Queensland Ministerial Advisory Committee for the Queensland Coal Mining Safety & Health Act. He has advised international governments on mine safety following significant mining accidents, and is a member and the current Chairman of the Queensland Mines Rescue Board.
