Alex Bates

In April of 2017, Alex Bates was appointed Regional Senior Vice President of Newmont Australia. Alex joined the company in 2015 in the role of General Manager Newmont Boddington.
Under Alex’s leadership, Newmont has successfully completed the Tanami Power Project, lowering power costs and carbon emissions by 20 percent. Alex is currently leading the implementation of Newmont’s climate targets in the Australia region; and has overseen the safe implementation of the Automated Haulage Systems (AHS) at Newmont Boddington – a gold industry first. He is also responsible for the AUD 1.1B Tanami Expansion 2 project.
Alex has more than 30 years of experience in the resources industry. He has held a variety of senior, international management roles, including in refinery operations, open cut and underground mining, as well as civil and industrial construction.
Alex has a passion for leadership development, with extensive experience building and leading high performing teams to enhance safety, profitability and sustainability. He champions inclusion and diversity as important levers in supporting the next generation of talent. He has been a mentor in Women in Mining (WA) for the last eight years, and is a member of CEOs for Gender Equity and the Champions of Change Coalition.
Alex is a Board member of the Minerals Council of Australia and chairs the Safety and Sustainability Committee. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has served as a Director on the Board of the Gumala Aboriginal Corporation.
Alex is originally from Wales, and now lives in Perth with his family. He studied Engineering in Cape Town, moving to Australia in 2004.
