Talk Overview

Over the last five years Chris Davis has worked tirelessly to improve the awareness and health practices of miners in Australia by persuading others to reduce the amount of very fine carbon particles in the underground air. Managing micro particles goes beyond mine ventilation, it is an emerging issue for awareness in all work and social environments where micro particles impact on air quality.

  • The WA Mines department (DMIRS) led the world’s biggest survey of nano diesel particulates in diesel fumes in an underground mine and their effect on miners’ health.
  • This led to the Western Australian government bringing forward legislation to lower the amount of carbon allowed in the underground air and tightening monitoring. The NSW government has already implemented similar legislation.
  • At least one equipment manufacturer has changed their equipment to emit less carbon particles.
  • Filter suppliers are making available filters that are 100 times better than previous (and still sold) filters.
  • Some mining companies understand that they can improve the breathed environment of their workers for no additional cost.
