It’s an absolute privilege to announce that the APAC (Australian Pacific) Mining Games will be held in Perth, Western Australia, in 2025. Formerly known as National Mining Games (NMG), the event is expanding its reach and impact in 2025, with the inclusion of the New Zealand Student Chapters marking an exciting milestone. With this incoming change, this year promises to be bigger and better, fostering greater collaboration and camaraderie among Student Chapters from across the continent.

The Mining Games honour the lives lost in the 1972 Sunshine Mine Disaster in Idaho, United States, through preserving and celebrating traditional mining techniques such as hand steeling, gold panning and mucking. These games are not just a nationwide tradition, but are celebrated globally, making them a powerful platform to connect students with the mining community and keep old traditions relevant.

What makes the Mining Games truly remarkable is the sense of community it builds. Students engage with peers and young professionals from across the nation and beyond, creating opportunities to network and bond while competing in challenging events. But it’s not just a fun way to compete and engage with friends from across the country, the games also highlight vital safety practices, such as wearing appropriate PPE, maintaining situational awareness, and fostering a culture of care for those around you, which are all essential behaviours for the mining industry.

Last year’s 2024 APAC Mining Games competition in Brisbane was a resounding success with approximately 100 students from across the country competing and strong support from several industry partners. The enormous scale of this event leaves some big shoes to fill for the upcoming competition in Perth, but we are thrilled to rise to the challenge as we host this landmark in 2025.

With Perth’s rich mining heritage and world-class facilities, the 2025 APAC Mining Games promise to be an unforgettable experience for participants and spectators alike. If you're a student eager to get involved or a company interested in supporting the event, now is the time to join this extraordinary celebration of mining tradition, safety, and innovation. Let’s connect, celebrate, and elevate together!
