Applications for AusIMM's 2025 Mentoring Program are now open.
John Landmark, Vice President of Corporate Affairs (Australia) at Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd, and a past mentor in AusIMM’s Mentoring Program, shares his insights and experiences from his time as a mentor.
With a career that spans decades, John’s decision to mentor was motivated by his desire to "give back" to the industry that has shaped his career while staying connected to emerging professionals.
In this conversation, he reflects on the rewarding aspects of mentoring, the growth he witnessed in his mentee, and why he believes the program is a valuable opportunity for both mentors and mentees alike.
Why did you decide to become a mentor for AusIMM’s Mentoring Program?
I have always believed I owe it to the broader industry to “give back” when I can in order to sustain a vibrant sector that has provided me with many unique experiences and a great career. There is also a more self-centred motivation of using it as a chance to “stay in touch” and be exposed to thinking and challenges of professionals several decades younger than myself.
What was the most rewarding part of being a mentor?
I really enjoyed being able to get to know an individual outside of my workplace, who was prepared to share their views and opinions. The chance to track the threads of the conversations over a 6 month period and see and hear what change was possible through our regular engagements was particularly rewarding.
What impact did you see on your mentee as a result of your guidance?
I saw considerable growth of my mentee in several areas. Increased self-confidence, a greater ability to step back and see a bigger perspective, and a willingness to engage with more purpose in their workplace turning their challenges into growth opportunities.
Why would you recommend other professionals get involved in AusIMM’s Mentoring Program?
Having now mentored around 10 people through several of the AusIMM and industry programmes, I can vouch for the overall process and importance of mentoring. Whilst seemingly simple as a process in our development toolkits, it offers great benefits to both mentor and mentee. It is a unique way for individuals to gain perspective, build trust and expand their networks.
