2022 Metallurgical Society update

ยท 400 words, 2 min read

As Covid restrictions ease across the country we are now able to look forward to getting together in person with our peers for a long overdue catch-up.

MetSoc has 2 major MetFest events scheduled for 2022: Adelaide on May 5 and Parkes on October 21.

Our Adelaide MetFest is being hosted by OZ Minerals and has attracted a full day of technical presentations from regional sites including Carrapateena, Prominent Hill, Olympic Dam, and Perilya. Registrations for MetFest Adelaide are open via this link.

MetFest Parkes will be hosted by Northparkes Mine and we are taking the concept of 'Students Meets Industry' to a whole new level by inviting undergraduate students of Chemical Engineering (potential metallurgists) to come for a plant tour of the Northparkes concentrator and attend the technical metallurgy sessions during the afternoon.

The student tour is aimed at young engineers who are considering a career in metallurgy or mineral processing and will give regional sites a chance to meet their potential future workforce. We are hoping to get at least 60 students to this event. More information will be provided as planning progresses.

This years Delprat Distinguished Lecture will be delivered by Peter Munro. The series will commence at the Adelaide MetFest event. As travel is now finally allowed throughout the country we intend on delivering the lecture as an in-person event to branches across the country.

MetSoc is also working towards a MetSoc prize for students to encourage undergraduate students to pursue a career in metallurgy. Once the details have been finalised we will issue the details to our membership.

A few significant changes have been made to the MetSoc committee with the transition to the new year.

Stuart Emery has stepped down after 6 years on the committee, part of which as Deputy Chair. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Stuart for the time and effort he put into MetSoc during his term on the committee and continues to do in the organising of the Adelaide MetFest.

Virginia Lawson was re-elected onto the committee and has stepped up into the role of Deputy Chair. We welcome 2 new committee members this year: Daniel Schwann and Iain Goode.

Current Committee and Roles are as follows:

Chair - Bianca Newcombe
Deputy Chair - Virginia Lawson
Treasurer - Iain Goode
Immediate Past Chair - Aidan Giblett

Stuart Nichol (Webinar Coordinator)
Diana Felipe (Delprat Coordinator)
Amanda Rice (MetSoc Toolbox)
Maedeh Tayebi-Khorami
Chris Bucknell
Daniel Schwann
Chris Gianatti
Andrew Hoyle
Damian Connelly
Jorc Observer - Dean David

Keep well,

Bianca
