Adelaide Branch October Chair's Report
Welcome to the October edition of the AusIMM Adelaide Branch Newsletter. It has been way too long between newsletters – completely my fault, of course – but that means there’s plenty to talk about.
In this newsletter you can read a recap of all our recent events, so instead in my column I will talk about the even busier time coming up between now and the end of the year. I really hope you can join us at one of the following:
- The Technical Lunch on 20 October with Greg Swain, Exploration manager for FMG in South Australia. Held at the University of Adelaide.
- New Professionals Network and Adelaide Student Chapter mixer on 21 October at the Belgian Beer Café.
- The Annual Essington Lewis Memorial Lecture on 2 November, with Steve Hill, Chief Scientist at Geoscience Australia. Held at the National Wine Centre. This event will also be livestreamed.
- The Peak and the Pit series, hosted by the New Professionals Network on 8 November at Sol Bar, SkyCity.
- The South Australian Exploration and Mining Conference on 2 December at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
- The Adelaide Branch AGM, gourmet BBQ and guest speaker AusIMM President Dave Clark on 7 December at Largs Bay Sailing Club.
I know it’s a busy time in the lead up to the end of the year, but please support these events if you can. Like all our events, they are organised by our hard-working team of volunteers.
I would like to particularly mention the Essington Lewis Memorial Lecture. This free public lecture is one of the highlights of our calendar. We have been very fortunate to have secured the Chief Scientist of Geoscience Australia, Dr Steve Hill as the distinguished lecturer. There will be complimentary drinks and canapes following the lecture, which has been supported by BHP continuously for the last 48 years. Put the date in your diary as it should be a great event.
And the other event to highlight is the Branch AGM. Although it sounds like another boring meeting, we keep the formalities short and have an enjoyable night. There will be a guest speech from outgoing AusIMM President Dave Clark and then a gourmet BBQ dinner and drinks as we watch the sunset over the water from the Largs Bay Sailing Club balcony. Again this will be a completely free event for AusIMM members and their partners. Watch out for more details soon.
I will conclude by reflecting on what it means to be a member of the AusIMM. Upon the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, I was prompted to re-read the AusIMM Royal Charter. Although it’s a fairly simple document it reminds us of the importance of the Institute and the high regard in which it is held. To me, the most important section sets out the Purpose, which is: To advance the sciences applying to the minerals industry for the benefit of the community”. A number of methods of achieving this purpose are listed. The Adelaide Branch specifically contributes towards the Purpose by facilitating the exchange of ideas and information; encouraging the development and acquisition of knowledge and competency; and providing leadership and service to its members. I encourage you to also reflect on how you are contributing to the purpose and to consider joining our 2023 committee at the upcoming AGM.
