ยท 331 words, 3 min read

The 14th AusIMM, GSA & AIG Tasmania Geobash was held on the Thursday, 28 November 2024 at Tullah Lodge.

105 delegates attended the forum, to hear from 15 speakers who covered topics including geoscience, exploration updates, geophysics, and ydro future project updates.

The forum dinner was attended by 80 delegates (a sold out event!), where the GSA  W.H. Twelvetrees Medal was announced to the 2024 winner: MRT Chief Geologist, Andrew McNiel.

Prior to the event, CODES held a Critical Minerals Workshop at Tullah

On Friday, 29 November, Ron Gregory hosted a post event field trip which took attendees to the historic nickel/copper/lead zinc mining field of Melba Flats, just outside Zeehan. The took the group to many early shaft mine sites, including the very first nickel mine in Australia!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors: Ron Gregory Prospecting, Entura, Hydro Tasmania, MMG, and supported by Minerals Resources Tasmania. Thank you to our speakers, Stewart Holmes for his AV assistance, and to our organising committee: Jane Capp, Tony Webster, Trav Holmes, Sheree Armistead and John Stanton.

Congratulations Andrew McNeill, recipient of the W.H. Twelvetrees medal

Please join us in congratulating  recently retired Chief Government Geologist, Andrew McNeill who was awarded the Geological Society of Australia's W.H. Twelvetrees Medal at the AusIMM Geobash hosted in Tullah on the 28th November 2024.

This prestigious medal is awarded at the discretion of the Tasmanian Division of the Geological Society of Australia, usually annually, to recognise important contributions to the Earth Sciences within Tasmania (including Macquarie Island), or for outstanding contributions to Earth Sciences while resident in Tasmania. In the spirit of W.H. Twelvetrees, contributions considered include meritorious feats of geological exploration in Tasmania or elsewhere; significant published works; or meritorious service to the Earth Sciences.

No stranger to the explorers and miners in Tasmania, Andrew has been a staunch advocate for the Tasmanian sector during his tenure as Chief Government Geologist with Mineral Resources Tasmania.

Congratulations Andrew!
