Hunter New England Student Chapter December 2024 Update

ยท 273 words, 3 min read

At the beginning of September, five students from the Hunter New England Student Chapter, including two from Uni of Newcastle and three from UNE Armidale, attended the New Leaders Summit and National Mining Games in Brisbane.

The New Leaders Summit provided a great experience for university students, offering insights into the future of the resources industry over two days of keynote presentations and panel discussions delivered by industry representatives and students. The summit also offered numerous networking opportunities, enabling students to connect with like-minded peers and industry professionals.

The Hunter New England Student Chapter sent a mixed team of five students - two females and three males - to compete in the National Mining Games. They participated in events such as track and set, muck and cart, swede saw, airleg drilling, hand-steel, blast board, survey, and gold panning. The Mining Games were instigated to honour the memory of those who lost their lives in the 1972 Sunshine Mine Disaster in Idaho, USA. They also serve to preserve traditional mining techniques. The two-day competition showcased exceptional camaraderie and team spirit among participants.

The Student Chapter would like to thank their sponsors – Whitehaven Coal, Glencore, Xenith Consulting, TacTech, GroundSearch Australia, ACPS, MACHEnergy, Thiess and WIMnet for making this invaluable experience possible.

More recently, the Student Chapter held another Students Meet Industry Night, a social event, and had a significant role at the university’s Engineering Ball.

The student chapter is changing its name to Hunter Student Chapter. New executive team members have been elected and are successfully transitioning to the new committee. The new executive representatives attended the Branch Planning Day for 2025 in Newcastle.
