Reflections from the New Leaders Conference
In October the Perth Branch sponsored three young professionals to attend the New Leaders Conference. Here are their thoughts:

“The New Leaders Conference provided an invaluable opportunity to hear from industry professionals on emotional intelligence, inclusive leadership and networking skills. I feel a lot of new professionals entering the mining industry often place a lot of effort into learning the technical aspects of their disciplines. This conference provided both a reminder and useful strategies for developing other important facets of our jobs whilst in the early stages of our careers.”

“With 3 years of industry experience I am a young professional who sometimes may feel a bit lost when it comes to future career pathways. Our industry is in a time of fast development and I want to make sure I am ready for the changes. For me the highlight from New Leaders 2019 are the sessions on emerging technology. Some of the technology such as autonomous haul trucks are already being implemented and the focus now is to explore what else can we deploy automation. Some innovations are ongoing such as the using artificial intelligence and data analytics for exploration targeting. While some ideas such as space mining sounded wild before attending the conference, after listening to the speakers I become confident that I will see it in my life time. As a new professional in the industry I want to know more about these emerging technology and contemporary issues so I know how to strengthen my skills for future growth. The conference has delivered above expectation and gone the extra step to include soft skill workshops that focuses on how to handle the dynamic changes we are or will be experiencing. With so many like-minded people who joined me at this conference I am very pleased with the new connections I’ve made during the networking sessions and I hope many more will benefit from New Leaders 2020.”

“The conference acted as a bridge between new professionals and students with firsthand information from industry leaders, peers as well as interactive sessions aimed at student development as future leaders. I thoroughly enjoyed all the sessions but my favourites included: Amy Jacobson’s – Finding your ‘Y’, Jesse Jones’ – How to get a start in the mining industry, Karen Tisdell’s – Linkedin, building a winning profile and Conrad Pires’ – Space Mining, what you need to know.
The two days’ worth of learning and professional development has opened my eyes to a whole new perspective of how to approach challenges in my personal and professional life. I also now have a greater understanding of the importance of networking and building a personal brand in the industry. I want to thank the AusIMM Perth branch committee from the bottom of my heart for giving me the opportunity, and Roy Hill for always supporting and encouraging young talent to reach full potential.”
HSE Update: Significant Incident Report in WA
On 22nd October the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety released a Significant Incident Report pertaining to mechanism fracture of a trailer tarpaulin cover that resulted in a fatality.
