Peter McCarthy on the current challenges and opportunities for the minerals industry

On Wednesday 26th June, distinguished guest speaker Peter McCarthy, Chairman Emeritus – AMC Consultants, gave a lecture on his insights into the challenges and opportunities for the minerals industry. The AusIMM Melbourne Branch Distinguished Speaker Lunch attracted over 100 people and was held at the prestigious RACV City Club.
Peter McCarthy’s illustrious career began at CRA Ltd in Broken Hill, where he worked in various technical and production roles and later in mine planning and research. He then moved to Victoria and spent several years in project management and in lecturing at what is now Federation University. He joined James Askew Associates (now AMC Consultants, an international mining consultancy), in 1986, where he worked on mine feasibility studies, valuations and technical studies for projects in Australasia, Asia, Europe and Africa. He also worked on gold exploration and acquisition projects as a consultant and a non-executive director of five public companies.
Peter has degrees in Mining Engineering and Geoscience and has published more than 60 technical papers and articles. He was chairman of Unity Mining Limited from 2005 to 2013 and was a two-term President of the AusIMM. He is a Life Member and board member of the Sovereign Hill Museums Association, an Honorary Fellow of The AusIMM, a Chartered Professional Engineer, a member of the CSIRO Mineral Resources Advisory Council and a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
