A Deep Dive into Underground Mining: My Hands-On Experience
As a fourth-year Mining and Civil Engineering student, the blend of my time underground and in the tech services department at Ulan West was more than just a vacaction placement; it was an eye-opening experience. Working in Technical Services, I got a firsthand look at underground mining operations, deepening my understanding of both engineering principles and the real-world challenges miners face every day.

During my time at Ulan West, I took on a range of responsibilities, from conducting gas bag sampling and ventilation surveys to assisting with survey tagging. Working alongside the continuous miner crew, I helped install rib, roof, and mega bolts; an essential process of development production. I also had the incredible opportunity to observe longwall operations during a step-around phase, watching the intricacies of chock removal and reinstallation. This was a unique experience that most vacation students don’t get to witness, and I was beyond grateful for the opportunity. I’ll be taking many valuable lessons back to university with me.

While I didn’t face any major challenges, I quickly realised that asking questions was the best way to make the most of my experience. Everyone was willing to share their knowledge, and their support helped me learn faster and with more confidence. Seeing roadway mining in action gave me a whole new appreciation for underground operations. It was one thing to study mining in the classroom, but witnessing the demanding conditions and the precision required in real time made everything click. I now understand how engineering principles translate into practical, on-the-ground work.

This hands-on exposure has made me feel more prepared for my future in mining. The insights I gained will directly support my final-year coursework, and I now have a clearer vision of my career path. My advice to future students? Ask lots of questions; this is the best chance to learn from industry professionals. Stay positive, embrace every challenge, and make the most of every experience!
