My name is Isabelle Spanswick, and I am a final year Bachelor of Geology student at James Cook University. During the 2024/2025 Christmas break, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in MMG's student vacation program as a geology student at the Dugald River site. I discovered this opportunity at an AusIMM semester 1 social event (lawn bowls), where I connected with the superintendent geologist from Dugald River. After applying through their website in early July, I was thrilled to learn of my successful application by the end of the month.

My experience at Dugald River was invaluable, allowing me to apply my theoretical geological skills to a structurally controlled deposit. As an underground zinc and lead mine, I gained firsthand experience in the day-to-day operations of underground mining. My primary responsibilities included mapping and interpreting structures and lithologies, as well as logging diamond drill cores – a fundamental skill for both exploration and mine geologists.

Working alongside a team of passionate and experienced geologists was a significant highlight of the placement. Their industry insights and geological expertise have provided me with knowledge that will undoubtedly benefit my future career. Additionally, the time spent at the camp with other vacation students and graduates allowed me to forge valuable connections that I hope to maintain throughout my professional journey.

This opportunity, coupled with the support provided by the program, has solidified my decision to pursue a career in the resource industry as a geologist. The hands-on experience and mentorship I received at Dugald River have been instrumental in shaping my professional aspirations.
