The contribution of Tasmania’s highly skilled women working in mining and industry has been recognised at the 2019 Women in Resources National Awards, held in Sydney recently.

The winner of the Tasmanian Exceptional Woman in Tasmanian Resources 2019, Shelley Hunter (South32 TEMCO), was joined by Exceptional Young Woman in Tasmanian Resources 2019 winner, Jessica Richmond (Grange Resources) and Outstanding Tasmanian Tradeswoman, Operator or Technician 2019 winner, Kayla Williams (South32 TEMCO) at the awards at NSW Parliament on 12 September.

Ted Bradshaw, Chairman of AusIMM WIMnet and one of the national judges, attended the gala awards dinner and said the Tasmanian winners found the experience of being national finalists rewarding.

“The awards recognise the skills of women who are making an important contribution to the resources industry around Australia.

“This year’s calibre of finalists was exceptional and provided our Tasmanian finalists the opportunity to engage with like-minded women to discuss career and leadership pathways for women in the sector while promoting gender diversity.

“Shelley, Jessica and Kayla are to be congratulated for being great ambassadors for Tasmania on the national stage.”

More than 280 industry leading women and men attended the awards, which were hosted by the NSW Minerals Council and sponsored by Rio Tinto. They heard how, since the late 1990s, the proportion of women in the minerals workforce has increased from around 9 per cent to 16 per cent.

The Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing and Energy Council (TMEC) sponsored the 2019 Women in Resources Tasmania Awards in partnership with AusIMM Women in Mining Network Tasmania (WIMnet).

The 2020 Women in Resources Tasmania Awards will be launched in February.

“The awards provide important recognition for the contribution women are making locally, but also for the companies who employ, support and provide career opportunities for our inspiring women,” Ted said.
