The North Queenland Branch invites you to hear from Ross Garling, who has has devoted his career to tailings re-mining and re-processing – present on, “Tailings: A Wasted Resource.” His presentation will examine projects which have extracted value and reduce environmental liabilities form material previously classified as waste.

In 1991, when Ross returned to Australia he specialised in the Evaluation, Re-Mining, and Re-Processing of Tailings.

Initially he was the Eastern States Manager of Clough Mining Services (a JV with Fraser Alexander). Works included re-mining and re-processing of the Rhondda tailings, and emplacement of the Mt Piper fly ash.

As MD of Superior Coal & Hydraulic Mining Solutions – works included a major evaluation of the re-mining and re-processing of the Oaky Creek tailings, dredging and re-processing of the Gladstone Port run-off dams, re-mining Warkworth and German Creek tailings, reducing the batter angles at South Stradbroke Island beach sands to prevent dredge swamping, and the evaluation of a number of other projects.

Since 2011 Ross has worked as an international consultant on tailings.  His works include:

  • Century Mine Tailings various closure options for MMG, and recommended the re-mining and re-processing, which is now operating.
  • Hellyer – study of re-mining strategy in difficult terrain – now operational.
  • Detailed study re-mining the Macraes tailings at 10 mtpa to expose an orebody
  • Grasberg – developed a system to re-mine tailings and recover magnetite.

Numerous other mines – studies on the viability, re-mining and re-processing of tailings.
