Join the Tasmania Branch on a 1 day Field Trip to South West Heritage Area at Melaleuca – Port Davey for guided tour of the Historic Tin Mine, House, Workshops and Processing Plant – last operated by Peter and Barbara Wilson.

Due to the isolation of the lease Peter built the house, workshops and processing plant entirely from scratch, shipping supplies in by barge and by his 52ft boat, the Rallinga.

Following the closure of the last Australian Tin smelter in Brisbane, Peter designed, built and operated his own Tin smelter at Melaleuca.

This event is a great chance to visit a remote part of Tasmania and learn about our mining heritage.

About the Speaker:

Marie Jones – Granddaughter of Peter and Barbara Wilson. Marie now works for Pitt & Sherry as a Senior Mine Engineer.

“My grandfather was Peter Willson who, together with his wife Barbara, owned and operated a small scale alluvial Tin Mine within the South West World Heritage Area at Melaleuca, Port Davey. I grew up spending summers on the mine and understand the mine, processing plant and smelter well. I would like to offer AusIMM members the opportunity of a guided tour to Melaleuca.”

Important Event Information:

Access to the South West is very much weather dependent. Please ensure you agree to the Terms and Conditions of the trip and from the airline.

The Tasmania Branch take no responsibility for the weather on the day and if cancelled we will reschedule for the Sunday and or to a later date.

Delegates will be responsible for their own accommodation in Hobart.

Delegates will be attending this event at their own risk and will need to complete a Participant Waiver as part of the registration.

There is unfortunately no disability access due to the remote site location.

It is highly recommended that you purchase travel insurance for this trip, which can cover things like:

  • changes in travel plans and travel cancellation
  • medical and hospital expenses
  • personal injury and death
  • delayed, damaged or lost Baggage and other items
  • missed flight connections and additional expenses.
