Last Chance to Register: Exploration of the Hidden Continent of Zealandia

The AusIMM New Zealand Branch invites you to the first Nelson Discussion Group of 2019, with Professor Rupert Sutherland presenting results of geophysical and scientific drilling research voyages that shed new light on this unusual continent.

The Zealandia continent is twice as big as the land area of India but is mostly submerged beneath deep (>1km) ocean. Over several decades a group of scientists has been surveying and exploring the continent to claim sovereignty, try and understand how it formed, evaluate possible resources and learn how its environment and biology evolved through time.

Rupert Sutherland is a professor of geophysics and tectonics at Victoria University of Wellington. He will present results of geophysical and scientific drilling research voyages that shed new light on this unusual continent and will reflect on why the continent of Zealandia may turn out to play a key role in the future of humanity.
