Poor mental health affects 1 in 2 Australians.

We lose 2 people per day to Suicide in the Mining Industry.

WIMnet NSW & Hunter Region Branch would like to invite you to join us for an evening event in Newcastle to discuss mental health in the Mining Industry and the work of Mates in Mining.

This event is being run in support of Mates in Mining who are a registered Charity as part of the “Mates In” group. All money raised above costs will be donated directly to the Mates In group, along with all ticket sales.

We have a guest speaker panel lined up to provide us information on the work being done by Mates In Mining, what we can do to support people showing signs of poor mental health & some statistics that relate to the Mining Industry.

There will be opportunities for you to contribute to networking & discussion.

We look forward to welcoming you and please feel free to bring a friend or colleague!

The MATES program is an integrated program of training and support – one without the other is insufficient. To only do training without pathways to support is potentially dangerous and to only do support without raising awareness is to simply be another Employee Assistance program.

The MATES program uses training as tool to raise awareness that there is a problem with suicide and its contributing risk factors in our industry and we can all be part of the solution.

The support is then provided through clear pathways to help, case management processes that ensure that workers in need of support are connected to appropriate help, and on site visits by field officers to support the site and its workers in an ongoing presence until the site closes.

MATES in Mining provides suicide prevention and intervention skills and suicide awareness to the Mining Industry. This is delivered through a three tiered approach of General Awareness, Connector and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
