Digital Tech Talk Overview

In 2019, EY was commissioned to prepare two reports for the Minerals Council of Australia on the “Future of Work” in the mining industry.  The first report provides an economic analysis of the implications of digital technology on mining (essentially demonstrating the technologies that were being adopted and the economic case for adoption).  The second report then addressed the changing skills landscape for miners that follows the adoption.

These reports show the fantastic opportunity that our mining innovation agenda represents, but also demonstrate the leadership, investment and revolution in skills base that is required going forward.  The reports bust the myths that permeate our mining industry, that impacts of innovation and technology-enhanced solutions are only about reducing headcount and cost base.  Instead a very different story is told – if done right, mining will prosper, and there will in fact be more mining jobs (which deliver higher wages already than other industries); they will be better jobs and the roles should be more transferrable, allowing us to better manage the inevitable cycles involved in global commodities markets.  The presenters will also address the impacts of Covid-19 on these findings.
