The North Queensland Branch invites you to hear from Jim Morrison on “A History of Greenvale Nickel” on Tuesday 29th October.

Jim Morrison will present an overview of the Greenvale Project from discovery of the nickel laterite in 1957, through its chequered history until the cyclic nickel price slump of 2015 forced the closure of operations.

The Greenvale nickel mine was brought into production by Metals Exploration and Freeport in 1974, with a new township developed and 225km of railway to the Yabulu nickel refinery near Townsville.

With infrastructure well advanced, the developing project suffered a severe set-back due to the 1970s oil price shocks.

The Queensland Government however took major equity in the Project thus enabling the operations to continue until reserves were depleted in 1992.

Operations continued with imported ore under various subsequent owners.

The presentation will discuss some of the multiple problems experienced during early production at Greenvale and the innovative solutions to sustain operations through many years of adverse economic conditions.

About the Speaker:

Jim Morrison’s five decades in geology have included some interesting times at a gold mine in Tennant Creek in the 1960s, nickel boom exploration and development at Nepean, Mount Keith and Greenvale, and mineral resource assessment for the Geological Survey of WA.  Since moving to Queensland three decades ago he has worked on various deposits including the Mt Leyshon, Charters Towers and Starra mines.  Jim is currently working for Map to Mine Pty Ltd, is on the EGRU Advisory Board and has been active with the AusIMM NQ Branch for over 25 years.

This event is part of the Hay’s Business Professional Week
