Gain rare insights from Jack Dermody, Manager - Operations / Deputy General Manager, on the progression of OZ Mineral’s Carrapateena mine from greenfield construction site to an operating asset.

Tech Talk Overview

OZ Minerals is a copper-focused, global, modern mining company based in South Australia. It owns and operates the copper-gold mine at Carrapateena. Carrapateena is an underground mine located in the highly prospective Gawler Craton in South Australia, approximately 160km north of Port Augusta. Carrapateena produced first concentrate in December 2019 following a three-year construction period and is targeting a 12 month ramp up period to achieve a production rate of 4.25 Mtpa, provided the cave propagates as expected. It is an underground sub-level cave operation with an estimated mine life of 20 years. A feasibility study is underway into the future expansion of the bottom half of the operation into a block cave.

Jack is the current Manager – Operations / Deputy General Manager at South Australia’s newest Mining Operation – Carrapateena.

Jack has spent his entire career building or operating underground hard rock mines. This has allowed Jack to work in four Australian States as well as abroad in Indonesia, resulting in both challenging and rewarding roles and situations. The last 10 years have been in primarily leadership roles that have broadened Jacks perspective and appreciation of a range of personal, interpersonal, technical and business fundamentals; Jack remains fascinated by doing things differently or better.

Jack brings with him a depth of experience to his current role through experience gained in establishing and operating the largest underground and gold mine in Australia prior to joining Oz Minerals.

Jack was born in the Northern Territory, completed his education in Adelaide (Mining Engineering and Applied Geology) and has returned to South Australia in 2018 following 7 years in New South Wales. This has allowed Jack to appreciate some of the great things SA has going for it and spend more time with his extended families.

Outside of work, Jack enjoys spending time with his young family as well as spending time away in the their camper trailer exploring – “preferably out of mobile range” he says.
