Subsidence issues associated with historic
mine workings have highlighted the need for enhanced geotechnical management of
the Martha pit over the remaining life. In conjunction with a detailed analysis
of pit slope issues a comprehensive geotechnical management plan has been
developed at Martha and is being used as the basis for development of similar
plans in other Newmont operations.

This paper covers the geotechnical issues
facing the Martha operation and the development and application of the
management plan.
