Emerging Relationships Between Mineralised Plutonic Terranes in New Zealand And Eastern Australia
Western New Zealand can
be regarded as a rifted continuation of eastern Australia.
Detailed studies of units previously considered to have trans-Tasman
correlations are being undertaken within the FRST Programme Mineral Wealth of NZ
and its EEZ to test specific connections, and thus add to the exploration
framework of NZ. Correlation of two major episodes of granitic magmatism are
currently being investigated. These represent the oldest (mid Paleozoic) and
youngest (Early Cretaceous) magmatic events that conjoined Australia and New Zealand are
believed to have in common.
