APCOM XXV

The APCOM XXV Conference provided an opportunity to gain
insights into the state-of-the-art in computer applications in mining and to
reflect on how far these applications have progressed. A comparison of the
topics at APCOM XXV with those presented the last time APCOM was held in
Australia also in Brisbane in 1977 is interesting. Some areas are unchanged:
geostatistics process modelling and control mining applications and mining
economics to list a few. Operations research has disappeared as a specific
topic. In 1977 there was one paper in an area titled interactive graphics. Today
such concepts are commonplace in all areas of computing applications. There was
no hint of expert systems or neural networks in 1977 areas which featured
prominently in this conference.
