The tangible effects of leakage are presented graphically, and a technique for quantifying the leakage characteristics of a ventilation column using the Solve' capabilities of a common spreadsheet is demonstrated. A case study of a working decline in Western Australia is used to demonstrate the potential for more realistic design of development ventilating systems, and for more cost effective management of the condition of the duct.
