EXPLO 2007
The global mining industry continues to expand on the back of strong commodity prices. New mines around the world, even those previously thought unfeasible, continue to be developed and brought into production in order to feed the ever increasing demand from developing nations. The rapid expansion of the industry has brought with it new challenges: the short supply of consumables, equipment and human capital. The result has been escalating production costs and a lack of knowledge transfer. This is all occurring in a climate of increased terrorist activity and continued political instability in many parts of the world. Blasting and explosives professionals will play a critical role in ensuring costs are kept under control, knowledge is transferred to the next generation and safety both on and offsite remains a top priority.
The papers contained in this volume discuss economic and environmental aspects of blasting, advanced modelling, changing regulations, permitted explosives in the 21st century, safety initiatives and the state of play of the industry's research directions.
