Explosive Energy Relief - The Key to Controlling Overbreak
One of primary causes of poor blast performance is the improper relief of explosive energy. Under or over-confined blasts modify the explosive's path of least resistance, which changes where and when the explosive energy is applied resulting in less than optimum blast performance. During the research for this paper the overbreak characteristics of five full-scale blasts were quantified using high speed cinematography and borehole cameras. The effectiveness of various overbreak control methods was also evaluated to guide design refinement. The results of this research along with general recommendations for reducing excessive damage are included with this paper.
