An advanced passivation technique of sulphide minerals in mine wastes for preventing acid mine drainage formation

Mining and mineral processing industries often produce huge amounts of sulphide-rich wastes that are disposed of in tailings dams or stored in impoundments (Park et al., 2019). These wastes could potentially generate acid mine drainage (AMD) after exposure to atmospheric conditions. Among the sulphide minerals, arsenopyrite (FeAsS), the most common arsenic (As)-bearing sulphide mineral, is of importance because its oxidation generates not only AMD but also releases toxic As into the environment.
