This paper describes the development and implementation of a real-time load haul dump (LHD) dispatch optimisation tool that has been deployed at Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 at Newcrests Cadia Valley Operations. The tool, known as ORB, is the first known successful implementation of an optimisation-based, autonomous, real-time dispatch tool custom built for underground mining operations that co-ordinates the optimal dispatch of LHDs in a block cave in order to achieve a range of objectives while adhering to draw compliance and geotechnical constraints. It is an example of short-term interval control using real-time dispatch. This extended abstract outlines the general problem of LHD dispatch. It then discusses the preexisting business planning process in underground block cave mines and identifies key limitations to that approach. Within this context, an optimisation-based solution is presented along with an iterative approach to its development to ensure minimal time to value. The resulting tool is described at each step of its evolution from a simple pre-shift planning tool to a full cave management application. Finally, using Newcrests Cadia Valley Operations as a case study, we quantify the improvements to operations realised by ORB and the business process change it has facilitated.
