Decline shafts are an attractive option to both new and existing mining operations where there is a need to access an inclined orebody deposit via on-reef development so as to generate a return in the shortest possible time._x000D_
There are many different technologies that are available to transport men, material and rock in incline shafts. This paper focuses on the applicability of two hoisting technologies for decline shafts, namely endless and direct rope systems. The pros and cons of each system are reviewed. A common concern with direct rope haulage systems is the possibility of generating slack rope during deceleration. This paper illustrates the issues involved in designing a system so as to avoid the possibility of slack rope. In conclusion, the key factors relevant to the selection of endless or direct rope haulages for a particular decline application are reviewed._x000D_
