Backfill Alternatives for Regional Support in Ultra-Depth South African Gold Mines
South African gold reserves extend to great depths. However, strategies for the mining of such deposits have changed only slightly over the past number of years. Regional support at depth is currently provided by rock pillars and backfill. Many problems have been experienced with these regional support practices at deeper levels. In this paper several alternative forms of regional support are described which include the use of concrete, the use of back area caving and confinement to strengthen pillars These new concepts are supported by numerical and laboratory modelling and in situ results.
