Backfill applied to highwall mining is foreseen as a means to increase recovery of mineable coal to levels comparable with underground longwall mining. This paper describes the progress of research to demonstrate the role required of backfill to achieve real increases in coal rCCOvCrCd h hi'eh ss-all mining methods.
