Origins and Characteristics of Lateritic Nickel Deposits
Major Francis Hamilton Buchanan coined the term `laterite'
(Latin; brick-rock) in 1807 for the red earths used for building
blocks in southern India. Although these earths were actually
weathered basalts, the term is now applied to weathering profiles
developed upon a wide range of bedrocks. The Ni-laterites are a
special class within the broad laterite family.
