Epithermal zeolite mineralisation, central Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand
The Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) of the North Island of New Zealand (Fig. 1) contains a number of active and recently extinct geothermal systems that host epithermal zeolite and gold mineralisation. Hydrothermal alteration assemblages in the active systems include the zeolite minerals mordenite and clinoptilolite/heulandite, which formed at temperatures of 60 110oC from dilute alkali chloride water of near neutral pH (eg Steiner, 1977; Browne, 1978).The Ngakuru and Guthrie grabens in the central TVZ, contains mordenite clinoptilolite deposits and epithermal Au-Ag prospects, associated with sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias, that are part of recently extinct geothermal systems (Fig. 1; Brathwaite, 2003; Drake et al, 2014; Brathwaite and Henderson, 2016). A deposit of mordenite-rich vitric tuff at Twist Road near Ngakuru is being worked by Blue Pacific Minerals and uses include: 1) absorbents for oil/chemical spills and animal wastes, 2) water treatment and filters, 3) conditioners for sports turf and slow release fertilizer, and 4) stock feed additives (Brathwaite, Hill and Merchant, 2006; Brathwaite and Novak, 2018).The mordenite clinoptilolite mineralisation/alteration is hosted in rhyolitic tuffs and ignimbrites, and is regarded as a form of low-temperature epithermal alteration in rhyolitic caldera settings that may be more widespread than previously recognised in the geological record.
