Regional-scale multi-element in soil baseline surveys over prospective mineral camps in New Zealand
In the past five years, approximately 55,000 km2 or 36% of New Zealands South Island has been sampled by multi-element soil geochemical baseline surveys: a non-contiguous area approximately the size of Tasmania or New York state (Figure 1). Multi-element chemical and isotopic analyses have been acquired from more than 3000 samples and 1300 sites, funded by the New Zealand Government. The geology underlying the southern survey areas (Figure 1) is made-up of Late Paleozoic-Mesozoic metamorphic and igneous basement rocks (Austral Superprovince) overlain in places by Late Cretaceous to recent sedimentary and volcanic rocks (Zealandia Megasequence). In the northern survey areas, samples were taken over ultramafic, mafic and sedimentary rocks of the Late Paleozoic-Mesozoic Dun Mountain-Maitai, Brook Street and other terranes, as well as over the mafic-felsic Rotoroa Igneous Complex (Figure 1). Within the survey areas, historic hard rock mineralisation includes orogenic-style Au Sb W with some Cr + Ni mineralisation. The world-class and actively mined orogenic-style Macraes gold deposit lies within the Otago-north Southland survey area. Alluvial gold mining was undertaken historically and presently within several regions within the survey areas. Most of the 15 major soil orders classified in New Zealand were sampled during these surveys. Land use and landcover is typically either beef / sheep / dairy farming on pasture, or public land with native vegetation, but other types were also sampled (eg viticulture and alpine).
